In a heart-wrenching incident, a mother cat lost her life after being struck by a car, while her helpless kittens were found abandoned at an animal shelter in North Haven over the weekend.
The distressing discovery unfolded when employees of The Animal Haven stumbled upon the kittens in a small box around 8:45 p.m. on Sunday.
According to the shelter, the kittens were left in a box that was carelessly left wide open, positioned next to their dog kennel. One of the kittens managed to escape but was later located beneath a pallet along with four other adult cats.
Efforts to locate a missing cat had been ongoing throughout the day. However, around 4 p.m. on Labor Day, a witness reported spotting a black cat. Tragically, the cat was discovered lifeless in the middle of the road, having fallen victim to a car accident, as confirmed by The Animal Haven.
It was heartbreakingly revealed that the cat who perished was the mother of the abandoned kittens.
The Animal Haven expressed their outrage at the situation, condemning those responsible for endangering the cats’ lives and causing harm. In a Facebook post, the shelter asserted, “The people who dumped these cats put them in direct danger and ultimately killed one of them so far. This is astronomically unacceptable regardless of where they were dumped.”
Among the adult cats rescued, one displayed a severe skin condition, and all of the abandoned kittens were found to be afflicted with ear mites and fleas. The animals are currently undergoing thorough testing for parasites.
The owner of the shelter disclosed to NBC Connecticut that their location, near the woods, is not an ideal spot for surrenders, yet they receive approximately 17 surrenders daily.
At this time, The Animal Haven has clarified that these cats are not available for adoption. Their primary focus is on providing the necessary care to nurse these animals back to health, with the intention of finding them loving homes once they are fully prepared.
The shelter is urging people to exercise responsibility when it comes to pet ownership, emphasizing the importance of not acquiring animals if they are not genuinely committed to their care. They highlight their stringent application process as a preventive measure against future incidents of abandonment and neglect.
Furthermore, The Animal Haven appeals to individuals to consider adopting locally, as there is an abundance of animals in their care that are eagerly seeking permanent homes.
