BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A stray kitten’s harrowing ordeal in a Brooklyn sewer turned into a heartwarming rescue story earlier this month, thanks to two quick-thinking NYPD officers—one of whom is now giving the feline a forever home.
On May 17, Officers Bloomquist and Frevola responded to a call about a cat trapped in a sewer, according to WLNY. Upon arriving, they removed a manhole cover and discovered the tiny kitten clinging to a floating Gatorade bottle.
Bodycam footage showed Officer Bloomquist climbing down into the sewer, retrieving the drenched and scraggly feline, and wrapping him in a blue bag. The NYPD’s 70th Precinct later shared a photo of the rescue on social media, though it remains unclear how the kitten ended up underground.
After the rescue, officers transported the kitten—affectionately named Splinter, a likely nod to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sewer-dwelling rat—to Animal Care Center NYC for evaluation. He was later placed with a foster family.
But the story didn’t end there. Officer Bloomquist, moved by the rescue, decided to adopt Splinter once the formal process is complete.
For a kitten who began life struggling in a sewer, his future now looks bright—and full of love.
