A litter of abandoned kittens was found in a drainpipe in Galway, with an animal welfare organization stepping in to save them. On Tuesday morning, a concerned member of the public called Galway SPCA, reporting that kittens were believed to have been abandoned with no sign of their mother.
Upon arrival, shelter volunteers scooped up the tiny cats and took them to safety. To lure the mother cat back and “end the cycle of stray kittens,” volunteers set a trap with food, eventually catching her. Unfortunately, as their cattery was full, they couldn’t keep her. Instead, they had her spayed so she could be released to live “a life without kittens.”
The charity shared details of the rescue, explaining: “We received a call this morning about kittens seemingly abandoned in a Galway drainpipe. These kittens were young and had been there for hours with no sign of their mother. In such cases, it’s easy to assume the mother has deserted them, but there are many reasons she might be absent for hours—and most of the time, she returns. However, these babies were exposed and at risk from predators and scavengers, so we took them in and returned later to trap the mother and end her cycle of having stray kittens. This afternoon, the property management company contacted us again to say the mother had arrived.”
