Birdie & Louie has announced the largest donation in its history—2 million cans of cat food sent to animal shelters, rescues, and food pantries across the United States.
The donation, which amounts to 400,000 pounds of wet cat food, began shipping in March from the company’s headquarters in Wetumpka, Alabama. Deliveries will continue through the summer, reaching more than 100 animal welfare organizations nationwide.
Founded in 2021 by the family-owned Worthy, Family of Brands, Birdie & Louie makes tuna-based recipes for cats with sensitive diets. The company said the donation came from surplus inventory and was redirected to help shelters struggling with high demand and limited supplies.
“With natural disasters displacing pets, shelters overcrowded, and supply chain issues affecting animal groups, we saw a chance to turn our extra stock into real help,” said co-founders Matt and Chas Worthy.
The donation is being carried out in partnership with Best Friends Animal Society, a national nonprofit working to make all U.S. shelters no-kill. Best Friends’ network of shelters and rescue groups will be the main recipients of the food.
“Thanks to strong support from pet owners and retailers, we’re in a position to give back,” the Worthy brothers said. “Helping pets and the people who care for them is the best way to do that.”
Eleven Logistical Enterprises is managing the more than 100 shipments needed to distribute the donation. The campaign also ties in with National Pet Month in May, highlighting the problem of shelter overcrowding and promoting pet adoption.
