Hong Kong is bidding a heartfelt farewell to one of its most cherished animal icons. Didi, the British Shorthair cat who inspired the popular “Mannings Cat” character in local pharmacy commercials, has passed away at the age of 18, his owner confirmed on social media.
News of Didi’s death quickly spread online, prompting an emotional response from fans who grew up seeing his familiar face in advertisements. Many shared messages such as, “Rest in peace,” and “Thank you for growing up with Hong Kongers.”
Didi first rose to fame in 2011, when he became the model for the Mannings pharmacy mascot—a large costumed cat featured in a touching TV commercial. In the ad, the cat travels across snowy mountains and deserts to find medicine for a sick child. The story deeply moved viewers and made Didi a household name.
His image remained a regular feature in Mannings’ campaigns, including their 2024 Lunar New Year promotion.
But Didi’s influence extended beyond television. He was a familiar sight in the Tai Hang neighborhood, where he and his fellow cats often wandered the streets. His owner documented his daily life on the Facebook page “Mannings Cat Fat Didi,” which attracted thousands of followers.
In February, Didi celebrated his 18th birthday. Though thinner, he still appeared lively, bringing comfort to his fans during his later years.
Following the news of his passing, social media was filled with memories and tributes. Neighbors and fans thanked him for the happiness he brought to the community and for his enduring charm.
Didi leaves behind a unique legacy as Hong Kong’s first widely recognized internet-famous cat. His gentle presence and iconic role in local culture will not be forgotten.
