Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL) staff and volunteers are helping two severely overweight cats shed pounds before finding them forever homes.
Boston, MA — Two cats named Maleficent and King are receiving special care at the Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL) to help them reach a healthier weight before adoption.
The 3-year-old female Maleficent and 7-year-old male King arrived at the shelter three times heavier than the ARL’s recommended healthy weight—tipping the scales at 30 and 33 pounds, respectively. Their excessive weight has led to mobility issues, preventing them from grooming themselves and increasing their risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, and other serious health conditions.
A New Lease on Life
Since arriving at ARL, the cats have undergone veterinary exams, dietary adjustments, and increased exercise to jumpstart their weight loss. Shelter staff removed painful matted fur and introduced structured playtime to encourage movement.
“Like humans, excessive weight gain for animals can be extremely detrimental to their overall health and well-being,” ARL stated in a news release. “Both cats needed a dietary plan to reduce their caloric intake, and as we all know, the key to weight loss is to get up and get moving.”
Progress and Personalities Shine
Over the past month, Maleficent and King have lost several pounds and begun showing their sweet, playful personalities—a sign of improved comfort and confidence.
Once they reach a healthier weight, ARL will place them in adoptive homes committed to maintaining their wellness. For now, shelter staff and volunteers continue to monitor their progress closely.
