Animal lovers in Victoria are gearing up for a purr-fectly unique event: the inaugural Fernwood Cat Stroll, set to take place next month as the first statewide gathering of its kind. Hosted by the Fernwood Community Centre and local cat advocacy group Paws in the Park, the stroll aims to celebrate feline companionship while raising funds for homeless cats.
A Feline-Focused Festival Like No Other
Scheduled for September 15 at Fernwood Botanical Gardens, the event will invite cat owners to walk their leashed felines along a scenic 1.5-kilometer trail, lined with pet-friendly vendors, adoption booths, and “cat enrichment stations.” Organizers expect over 200 cats—from sleek Bengals to cuddly Ragdolls—to participate, alongside rescue cats available for adoption from local shelters.
“Victoria has never seen an event where cats take center stage,” said event coordinator Maya Sharma. “We designed this stroll to showcase the unique bond between cats and their humans, while promoting responsible pet ownership.” Attendees can look forward to cat-themed workshops, a “best-dressed cat” contest, and even a “kitten cuddle corner” featuring rescue kittens.
Community Support Fuels Feline Fun
Local businesses have thrown their weight behind the initiative: Whiskers & Wine café is sponsoring a “catnip tea party” for humans, while pet store Kitty City will donate 10% of event-day sales to the Victoria Humane Society. The city council has even approved temporary “cat-friendly” signage for the gardens, marking it as a milestone for feline inclusion in public spaces.
“As a cat parent myself, I’m thrilled to see our community embrace these often-overlooked companions,” said Councillor Elena Kim. “Cats deserve their moment in the sun too—and what better way than a stroll through our beautiful gardens?”
Advocacy at the Heart of the Event
While the stroll promises fun, its core mission is to raise awareness about cat welfare. Organizers will distribute free resources on outdoor safety, microchipping, and trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs for feral cats. A special “memorial wall” will also honor beloved cats who have passed, allowing attendees to share photos and stories.
“Many people don’t realize how much cats enrich our lives until they experience it,” Sharma noted. “We hope this event not only entertains but also inspires more people to adopt rescue cats or support local shelters.”
Tickets for the Fernwood Cat Stroll are available online, with early-bird pricing ending August 31. For those unable to bring their cats, volunteers will be on hand to assist with strolling rescue cats who need exercise and socialization.
As Victoria prepares for its first cat-centric event, the Fernwood Cat Stroll is set to prove that when it comes to celebrating our feline friends, the sky’s the limit—or should we say, the treetops? Whether you’re a seasoned cat parent or a curious newcomer, this stroll promises to be a whisker-twitching good time for all
