Earlier this year, a pregnant calico cat named Patchwork left a shelter and stepped into a loving foster home—clinging to her caregiver as if she knew she was finally safe. Within days, she welcomed four kittens into the world, thriving under the care of her foster family.
A Warm Welcome
Britt, a volunteer with Murphy’s Law Animal Rescue, took in Patchwork just before she was due to give birth. The moment the calico stepped out of her carrier, she began kneading (“making biscuits”) and purring, instantly at ease in her new surroundings.
“She’s kind of obsessed with belly rubs and head scratches. She’s been opening up, cuddling, and playing—just a really sweet girl,” Britt shared.
Britt prepared a cozy nesting area with plenty of food, water, and toys. Patchwork wasted no time exploring before flopping onto her foster mom’s lap, craving affection.
A Safe Delivery
Britt spent nights on the floor beside Patchwork, gently petting her belly as the expectant mother kneaded away. The team monitored her via camera, waiting for the big moment.
One morning, Patchwork led Britt to her favorite box—a clear signal. With her foster mom by her side, she delivered four healthy kittens: Batton, Stitch, Spool, and Needle.
“She did such an amazing job. I was honored to help her and witness new life coming into the world,” Britt said.
Kittens Thrive Under Mom’s Care
The tiny quartet grew quickly, developing round bellies and strong appetites. “Patchwork is the best mom; her kittens have been making all the appropriate gains,” Britt noted.
Stitch, a cream-colored kitten, displayed a fierce spirit early on, hissing at unfamiliar scents—a natural instinct to protect her siblings. “The will to live when you’re that small is really amazing,” Britt remarked.
Between nursing sessions, Patchwork sought cuddles from her foster family but rushed back whenever her babies cried.
First Steps and New Adventures
By three weeks old, the kittens were wobbling on unsteady legs, eager to explore. Batton and Stitch were the first to venture outside their nest. Now, at a month old, they’re energetic fluff balls—climbing, jumping, and preparing for weaning.
“I’m so proud of how they’ve grown,” Britt said. “They’re learning every day.”
A Bright Future
Once the kittens are weaned, Patchwork will be spayed and placed for adoption. “She’s super affectionate and loves cuddles,” Britt said. For now, the devoted mother enjoys a peaceful life with her babies, surrounded by love—a far cry from her shelter days.
