A quick trip to PetSmart for cat litter turned into an unexpected adoption story for a woman in Texas, capturing the hearts of TikTok users across the internet.
The viral video, shared in February by TikTok user @lillvo, shows two women walking out of the pet supply store carrying two bags of litter—and a large black cat in a cardboard carrier. The on-screen caption reads: “POV: you go to PetSmart for cat litter but end up adopting a cat.”
Lillian Vo, 27, who filmed the video, told Newsweek she and her friend Arynn were simply running errands for their cats when they decided, just for fun, to check out the animals up for adoption.
“We ended up seeing Bear (the cat in the video) and fell in love,” Vo said. “My friend and I were debating who would adopt him. Since I already have three cats, I told Arynn she should adopt him so her cat could have a sibling.”
They alerted a store employee, spent some time meeting Bear, and Arynn signed the adoption papers that day.
Now named Bear, the black cat has settled into his new home with Arynn and her Scottish Fold cat, Channing. Though it took about a week for the cats to adjust to each other, Vo said they’re now “the best brothers.” Bear has a playful, puppy-like energy, makes messes, and loves to snuggle.
For cat owners considering a second feline, experts say the decision should be based on a cat’s individual personality. According to Catster, cats have a flexible social structure. Some thrive with other cats, especially if they were raised with feline companions, while others prefer solitude.
PetMD notes that signs your cat may need a companion include clinginess, changes in eating or sleeping habits, destructive behavior, litterbox problems, or low energy.
The adoption story clearly resonated with viewers. The video has amassed over 904,000 views and more than 201,000 likes on TikTok.
One user joked, “Get ready to talk to random black clothes on the floor,” while another wrote, “That’s how they got me too. Went for litter and left with a baby void.” A third user added: “If I had a nickel for every time I went into PetSmart for one thing and came out with a cat, I’d have two nickels.”
Bear’s story is a reminder that sometimes the best surprises come when you least expect them—and that you never know when you might leave a store with more than you bargained for.
