GREENSBORO, N.C. — What began as a routine grocery run turned into a life-changing moment for a tiny tabby kitten left on the side of the road.
A Surprising Discovery
Tammy, a local resident, was driving home when she spotted what appeared to be a discarded trash bag. As she pulled over to clean it up, she was met with an unexpected sight—a small orange kitten poking his head out, purring eagerly for attention.
“He was filthy but incredibly friendly,” said Stephanie Grantham, founder of Sparkle Cat Rescue. “He just wanted love.”
Tammy scooped up the kitten, later named Dexter, and took him home. After a gentle bath and a hearty meal—which he devoured—she contacted Sparkle Cat Rescue for help.
A New Lease on Life
Foster volunteers Erin and Lauren welcomed Dexter into their care. The nine-week-old kitten quickly adapted, exploring his surroundings with curiosity. He developed a particular fascination with running water and shadowed his foster mom everywhere.
“He’s a little lovebug—always snuggling or ‘helping’ with chores,” Grantham said.
Though his origins remain a mystery, Dexter’s luck was about to change.
A Friend in Need
Weeks later, another kitten, Walter, was rescued just 30 miles away. Found as a stray tuxedo cat, Walter was initially shy but soon blossomed in foster care. When introduced to Dexter, the two bonded instantly.
“They wrestled, chased each other, and napped together—it was like they’d known each other forever,” Grantham shared.
A Happy Ending Together
Sparkle Cat Rescue was determined to keep the pair united. Yesterday, their wish came true: a loving family adopted both Dexter and Walter, ensuring their friendship lasts a lifetime.
“These two survivors deserved a happy ending—and now they have one,” Grantham said.
