A fluffy house cat’s failed attempt to catch a squirrel has captured the hearts of TikTok users, racking up over 54,000 likes and nearly 400,000 views.
Mallory Wickersham, 32, from Roswell, Georgia, posted a video of her cat Winston, who spends most of his time indoors, trying to sneak up on a squirrel in her front yard. In the video, Winston slowly stalks his prey with laser focus, then suddenly dashes forward—only for the squirrel to easily escape up a nearby tree.
“I had never seen her try to catch a squirrel before, so I pulled out my phone,” Wickersham told Newsweek. “She really thought she had him. But he just chirped angrily from the tree. Now the squirrels chirp at them every time I let the cats out.”
Wickersham owns three cats and allows them to explore the yard under close supervision for about three hours a day. She explained that Winston, while primarily an indoor cat, loves being outside and shows a strong sense of adventure. He enjoys watching birds, catching bugs, and lounging in the sun. Indoors, Winston spends most of his time napping, cuddling with Wickersham, and trying to sample whatever food she’s eating.
“She’s very sweet and cuddly, and always ready for meals or a snack,” Wickersham said.
The cats began exploring the outdoors gradually, after showing a strong interest as kittens. Initially, they sat near screened doors, watching the outside world. After the family moved to a home with a bigger yard, the cats insisted on daily outdoor time.
“I let them out for about three hours a day, but only when I’m home,” Wickersham explained. “I either sit with them or check on them constantly. I’ve trained them to come when I call, and they behave very well.”
She is especially careful due to a past experience when a former outdoor cat went missing. Now, the cats enjoy their supervised outdoor adventures, spending time watching birds, exploring the yard, and playing in the catnip plant.
According to PetMD, indoor cats can safely enjoy time outside if closely monitored. Experts recommend introducing them slowly to the outdoor environment and ensuring the area is free from toxins, predators, and escape routes.
On TikTok, viewers were quick to comment on Winston’s failed pounce and determined tail flicks.
“‘I’m so sneaky,’ as the belly drags on the ground making more noise,” one user joked.
“OMG that tail is POSSESSED,” added another.
