Heidi Shoemaker, founder of Foster Kitten Mama, didn’t hesitate when she received a plea to help a pregnant tabby cat in need. Within days, the expectant mother—along with her two newborn kittens—arrived at the rescue, ready for a fresh start.
The cat, later named Mittens for her unique polydactyl paws (featuring six toe beans on each front foot), had already given birth before reaching her foster home. “I’m thankful to be able to help this little family out,” Shoemaker told [Publication Name].
A Tiny but Mighty Family
Mittens’ two kittens, Jingle (a tabby) and Bell (a Siamese mix), inherited their mother’s distinctive extra toes. With only two kittens to care for, Mittens devoted herself to nurturing them—and the duo thrived.
“At over two weeks old, Jingle weighed a whopping one pound and 0.3 ounces,” Shoemaker noted. “We often struggle to get four-week-old kittens to a pound.” Meanwhile, Bell made up for her small size with a big voice and equally large paws.
Escape Artists in Training
Even before mastering their coordination, the adventurous pair attempted daring escapes from their nest. “This picture looks like Jingle is lifting up his sister for an escape,” Shoemaker said with a laugh.
Once they graduated to a playpen filled with toys, the kittens eagerly lapped up water and nibbled solid food. Jingle claimed a tower of tracks as his royal perch, while Bell—destined to be a skilled climber—happily wrestled with her brother.
Mittens: A Playful Mentor
At just one year old, Mittens rediscovered her kitten-like energy, pouncing on feather toys and balancing on her hind legs. “She’s always ready for a session of wand play,” Shoemaker shared.
Her kittens watched closely, often mimicking her moves. Jingle, especially, followed his mother’s lead, while Bell embraced her inner explorer.
A Bright Future Ahead
Now safe in foster care, the little family will never face hunger or hardship again. This winter, they’re warm, well-fed, and surrounded by love—proof that a second chance can change everything.
