Toronto, ON — When animal rescuer Laila D’Souza was about to take a break from fostering, a tiny four-week-old kitten in desperate need of help changed her plans.
The cream-colored tabby, later named Toby, was found alone outside an apartment building after being abandoned by a neighbor. A concerned resident reached out to Laila, who immediately stepped in to provide care.
From Fear to Purrs
Toby’s transition from a scared stray to a loving foster kitten was swift. During the car ride to his new temporary home, he cried incessantly from his carrier. But as soon as he was placed in a cozy, safe space, his frantic meows turned into relentless purring.
“He went from meowing frantically to purring nonstop once he knew he was safe,” Laila told Love Meow.
Overcoming Health Struggles
Upon arrival, Toby was underweight and suffering from stomach issues, though his fluffy coat initially masked his condition. With proper medication and care, his appetite returned, and he quickly regained strength.
“Now, whenever he sees me from a distance, he starts purring. He’s such an affectionate, playful kitten,” Laila said.
A Kitten Who Demands Attention
Toby’s personality blossomed as he settled in. Having endured loneliness, he now craves constant companionship. He clings to Laila, resting his paws on her leg while gazing up at her with wide, adoring eyes. Even when he dozes off, he keeps a gentle grip, as if ensuring she won’t leave.
His vocal nature adds to his charm—Toby “roars” for attention whenever Laila enters the room, his tiny body housing the spirit of a lion.
A Bright Future Ahead
After two weeks of dedicated care, Toby’s health has improved dramatically. His next milestone? Meeting Laila’s gentle dog, Leya, who’s eager to welcome him.
Thanks to his rescuer’s efforts, Toby now enjoys a life filled with warmth, endless meals, and the love he once lacked. His story serves as a reminder of the resilience of abandoned animals—and the transformative power of compassion.
