A Washington man’s routine walk turned into an unexpected rescue mission after he spotted a severely matted stray cat—and soon learned the elderly feline had a surprising past.
Mehdi G, who later shared the story on Reddit’s r/cats community, said he couldn’t ignore the cat’s condition. Covered in tangled, dirty fur, the cat appeared neglected and in need of immediate help. Knowing matted fur can cause pain, skin irritation, and infections, Mehdi carefully trimmed what he could before giving her a bath.
He offered the cat food, water, and a safe place to sleep for the night. The next day, he took her to the vet—where he received an unexpected revelation.
The cat was microchipped, and records dated back to 2010, meaning she was at least 15 years old. When the clinic contacted the registered owner, she said she had moved away a decade ago and had given the cat to someone else, though she couldn’t recall who. Shocked and saddened by her former pet’s state, she gave Mehdi permission to keep the cat.
Mehdi named her Lil Bit.
After a thorough check-up and vaccinations, Lil Bit returned home to begin her new life. According to Mehdi, she’s “very sweet and cuddly” and has been sleeping peacefully—either nestled in blankets or right in his lap.
Lil Bit is now adjusting well, even bonding with Mehdi’s other senior cat. He also got her a collar with her name.
The story quickly gained traction online, with over 4,900 upvotes and hundreds of comments on Reddit. Users praised Mehdi’s compassion and timing.
“You didn’t find that cat on your walk. That cat found you,” one commenter wrote.
Another said, “You are an angel, take good care of her,” while a third added, “Faith in humanity restored for today!”
Lil Bit’s story is a touching reminder of the difference one act of kindness can make—and how even the most unexpected encounters can lead to lifelong bonds.
