In a highly unusual turn of events, Costa Rican prison guards made an unexpected discovery on May 6. As reported by the BBC and the Associated Press on May 19, a cat was apprehended at a local prison, found to be carrying a significant amount of illegal substances. This incident has raised eyebrows and highlighted a new, bizarre method criminals may be attempting to use to smuggle drugs into correctional facilities.
The Ministry of Justice of Costa Rica shared details of the case on social media. Upon inspection, the cat was found to have two packets of drugs securely fastened to its body. One packet contained 235.65 grams of marijuana, while the other held 67.76 grams of heroin, amounting to nearly 300 grams of contraband in total. Immediately after the discovery, the prison staff confiscated the drugs to prevent them from entering the prison system, where they could fuel further criminal activities among inmates.
Following the seizure of the drugs, the cat was taken to an animal protection agency. Animal welfare experts there will ensure the cat receives proper care, as it was likely unknowingly involved in this illegal operation. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have launched a full – scale investigation. Detectives are working to identify the individuals responsible for using the cat as a drug mule. They are looking into possible connections within the prison and examining if this is part of a larger, organized effort to supply drugs to inmates.
