The internet has been swept up in a heartwarming “Romeo and Romeo” love story between two neighboring cats, with many expressing hope that they’ll be reunited one day.
Last spring, a cat owner, known on Reddit as u/ruralqueso, noticed that his neighbor’s cat kept escaping to spend time with his own feline, Kreacher. The two cats, Kreacher and the neighbor’s orange cat named Mystery, immediately formed a strong bond, as the owner shared with Newsweek via Reddit.
Since then, Mystery would seize every opportunity to sneak out and visit Kreacher. The two would spend their days cuddling and playing joyfully. However, eventually, the neighbor realized that Mystery, an indoor – only cat, had been slipping out against his wishes.
The cat owner recounted an amusing incident: “The first time Mystery got out, my neighbor thought my cat was a girl and they were trying to ‘fool around,’ and he apologized and let me know his cat was neutered. I replied that it was okay because my cat’s a boy too, so there was no risk!” But with Mystery being kept indoors, their playdates have been limited to interactions through the window.
The owner of Kreacher took a picture of how the cats interact now and shared it on a Reddit post in the r/aww subreddit channel yesterday. He playfully referred to their story as a “Romeo and Romeo” love story. In the picture, Kreacher stretches his front paws up to the window sill, pulling himself up with his back paws against the house, while Mystery, comfortably inside his home, looks out the window to greet his friend. They almost touch, but the window screen stands in the way.
“Kreacher makes several trips a day to that window, even in the winter!” the owner said. “These two cats can’t and won’t stay apart. Mystery will sit at that window, meowing until Kreacher comes to visit. They’ll even take naps together, with Mystery on the window sill and Kreacher in the sunlight.”
The owner also mentioned, “My neighbor and I are friends, so when Mystery does manage to reach my house, the neighbor will come over for a chat and retrieve the cat. He doesn’t mind Kreacher being at the window at all.”
Within a day of being shared, the Reddit post garnered over 61,000 upvotes as users were enchanted by this charming love story. One Redditor commented, “This is heartbreaking. These cats have found a better love than I ever have; they deserve to be together with no barriers!”
