The Humane Society has launched a call for public support following the discovery of a newborn kitten discarded on a roadside, prompting urgent action to address the animal’s needs and raise awareness about pet abandonment. The tiny feline, estimated to be just days old, was found in a cardboard box near a rural highway by a passerby who immediately contacted the society’s emergency hotline.
“Upon arrival, we found the kitten barely responsive, exposed to freezing temperatures,” said Humane Society director Karen Martinez. “Our veterinary team rushed to provide warmth, emergency feeding, and medical evaluation. The kitten, now named ‘Hope,’ is stable but requires round-the-clock care for dehydration and hypothermia.” The incident highlights a surge in winter animal abandonment cases, where young pets are particularly vulnerable to harsh conditions.
In response, the society has activated its “Emergency Pet Care Fund” to cover Hope’s medical expenses and support other abandoned animals. They’re urging the public to donate supplies like kitten formula, heating pads, and blankets, or contribute financially through their website. “Abandonment is never the answer—even a call to our shelter could have connected this kitten to safe care without risking its life,” Martinez emphasized.
Law enforcement is also investigating the case as a potential instance of animal cruelty. Meanwhile, the society is reminding community members that surrendering pets to authorized shelters is always the humane option, and many facilities offer free or low-cost surrender services. “Hope’s survival is a testament to the power of quick action, but we need the public’s help to ensure no animal is left to fend for themselves,” said volunteer coordinator Jamie Lee.
To support Hope and other animals in need, the Humane Society has scheduled a virtual fundraiser next week, featuring adoption events and educational workshops on responsible pet ownership. “Every donation helps us provide another chance at life—just like we’re giving Hope,” Martinez added. “Together, we can turn this story of neglect into one of resilience and compassion.”
