Mondi has partnered with Saga Nutrition to create a recyclable mono-material dry pet food package that combines strong protection with eco-friendly design.
Called the re/cycle FlexiBag, this packaging replaces non-recyclable multi-material plastics. It meets CEFLEX recycling guidelines and Mondi’s own Path to Circularity Scorecard standards.
The new mono-material design supports Saga Nutrition’s goal to reduce waste while improving the package’s look.
The bag starts at 3 kilograms in size and offers high-barrier protection against moisture, fat, and odors. It includes secure sealing for easy storage and handling.
Durability is also a key feature to protect the pet food during shipping and handling.
Launched in October 2024, both companies highlight their commitment to sustainability and moving toward a circular economy.
“This partnership with Mondi is a major step in our sustainability journey,” said Saga Nutrition CEO Jérôme de Solliers. “Switching to recyclable mono-material packaging helps us support a circular economy and maintain the quality our customers expect.”
Olivier Werbrouck, Regional Sales Consumer Flexibles France at Mondi, added, “As demand for sustainable products grows, we’re excited to work with Saga Nutrition to provide packaging that truly supports a circular economy in pet food.”
This launch follows a study by Amcor showing 76% of pet food buyers consider sustainability, with 55% influenced by recyclable packaging claims.
Other recent innovations include Mondi’s FlexiBag Reinforced range for recyclable PE film packaging, adopted by pet food producer mera, and Berry Global and VOID Technologies’ high-performance PE film for store drop-off recycling.
Sonoco’s paper-based GreenCan packaging is also gaining use with plant-based pet treats, aiming to reduce plastic, lower shipping weight, cut carbon emissions, and improve curbside recyclability.
