DES MOINES, Iowa — The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) and the Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) joined forces on Saturday to distribute 65,000 pounds of pet food to families in need.
The drive-thru event, held at DMARC, provided each car with a case of dog food — enough to feed one dog for about a month. The donation came from The Farmer’s Dog and included ten pallets of food, estimated to equal 65,000 meals.
“This helps families continue to care for the pets they love,” said Abigail Youker, ARL Pet Support Services Coordinator.
ARL and DMARC formed their partnership in 2023 to better distribute pet supplies across local food pantries. In 2024 alone, the collaboration has already helped share 40,000 pounds of pet food.
“When you visit a DMARC food pantry, we want it to feel like shopping at a regular grocery store,” said Matt Unger, CEO of DMARC. “That means offering everything from pantry staples to pet food for households that need it. We’re grateful for this partnership with ARL and encourage the community to support our furry neighbors.”
Residents who missed the Saturday event can still receive help with pet food by visiting DMARC Food Pantry locations across the area.
