Rocklin, CA — A well-intentioned California woman got more than she bargained for after rescuing what she thought was a helpless kitten—only to discover it was actually a wild fox kit.
The Rocklin Police Department shared the unusual story in a Monday Facebook post, complete with a photo of the small, black-furred animal. According to authorities, the resident took in the baby creature, believing it to be a stray kitten, before a concerned family member alerted animal control.
“Animal Control responded and transported the fox kit to Gold Country Wildlife Rescue, where it is now receiving proper care,” the department stated.
A Growing Trend of Animal Misidentification
This isn’t the first time an animal lover has mistaken wildlife for a domestic pet. Earlier this month, a New England family accidentally adopted a coyote pup, thinking it was a lost puppy. Weeks before that, a Texas woman called animal control to rescue what she believed was an abandoned puppy—only to learn it was a young fox. In both cases, the animals were transferred to wildlife rehabilitation centers.

The Rocklin Police Department urged caution when encountering orphaned or injured wild animals. They recommend contacting a licensed wildlife rehabilitator and suggest using resources like the Humane Society of the United States or AnimalHelpNow to locate nearby assistance.
As for the fox kit, it’s now in safe hands—and the would-be rescuer has a memorable story to tell.
