HIGHLAND, Ill. — What began as a routine drive home turned into a startling rescue mission for Jennifer Donini when she discovered an unexpected stowaway in her car—a tiny kitten clinging to life under the hood.
The Illinois resident had already driven 91 miles from Carbondale to Highland last weekend when she heard faint meowing noises. Pulling over, she lifted the hood and found a grey-and-white kitten nestled near the engine.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Donini told local station KSDK. “Everything under there was hot—I have no idea how he survived.”
A Family Rescue Effort
After arriving home, Donini and her family spent over an hour carefully extricating the kitten, whom they named Duck. Despite the harrowing journey, the 7-week-old feline was unharmed.
With no owner in sight, Donini turned to social media to find Duck a permanent home—a search that ended quickly when her coworker’s sister-in-law, already seeking to adopt a kitten, eagerly took him in.
“He is certainly a very lucky duck!” Donini joked.
The incident joins a growing list of remarkable animal survival stories, proving once again that cats may indeed have nine lives.
