NORTH CAROLINA — A resilient kitten, now named Buttons, is stealing hearts after surviving a harrowing ordeal on Interstate 75 last month. Found disoriented and injured on the roadside, the fluffy tabby refused to let her rough start dim her spirited personality.
A Lifesaving Rescue
Animal rescuer Andrea Christian received a call from a state trooper who spotted the tiny kitten stranded near the highway. “She was stunned but alive—just this little ball of fur with injuries,” Andrea recalled. Photos revealed wounds on her chin, chest, and paws, along with ringworm patches. Andrea immediately took her in for treatment.
Despite her condition, the kitten—dubbed Buttons for the surgical “button” later placed on her chin—remained remarkably calm. “She seemed to know we were helping her,” Andrea said. Within days, her energy surged, and her appetite for affection became undeniable.
Demanding Cuddles, Defying Limits
Buttons rejected solitude, leaping from her pen whenever Andrea entered the room. “She’s always on a mission—probably how she ended up on the interstate,” Andrea joked. Though given toys and space to play, the kitten prioritized snuggles, tolerating her daily meds with purrs rather than protests.
When Buttons needed companionship, foster volunteer Nadija stepped in. Already caring for two ringworm-positive kittens, Nadija welcomed the social butterfly. “She climbed the cat tree like she owned the place,” Nadija said. “Nothing holds her back—she’s all personality and love.”
Healing and Happiness
Buttons underwent surgery to repair her chin, sporting a temporary orange “button” to protect her sutures. Soon, she was racing around her foster room, befriending her feline roommates. “The other kittens took her under their wing,” Nadija noted. “One in particular dotes on her—it’s like they knew she needed extra care.”
Now fully healed, Buttons’ fur has regrown, her wounds have vanished, and her signature chin button is gone. “She’s the sweetest—playful, chatty, and obsessed with cuddles,” Nadija said.
As Buttons awaits adoption, her rescuers reflect on her journey. “From highway peril to headbutts for attention,” Andrea said, “she’s a little miracle.”
