Roanoke, Virginia — Employees at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, including a hospital police officer, rescued a 6-week-old kitten abandoned in a paper grocery bag inside a dumpster on Monday.
According to a Facebook post by local animal welfare group Angels of Assisi, a hospital employee first heard a “concerning” noise coming from the dumpster and alerted Officer J.A. Grotta, who discovered the tiny gray-and-white tuxedo cat.
Photos shared by the organization show the kitten, now named Toby, curled in the officer’s hand and later perched on the shoulder of an Angels of Assisi caregiver. One image also reveals the Kroger bag where he was found.
After receiving veterinary care, Toby was placed in a foster home, where he will stay until he is old enough for adoption. “Thank you to Carilion Clinic for saving Toby,” the organization wrote.
The post drew an outpouring of support, with one commenter sharing, “My little Tuxie kitty was a dumpster baby, too. So thankful someone found him!”
Carilion Clinic responded on Instagram, writing, “Glad to help! Thank you for taking care of Toby and helping him find a home.”
