A newlywed couple’s honeymoon took an unexpected turn when they rescued an abandoned kitten in distress along the interstate—and ended up adopting her as their first pet together.
The bride, whose account was shared with the Associated Press, said her husband spotted a small, motionless figure on the roadside as they drove to their honeymoon hotel the morning after their wedding.
“He slowed down immediately and pulled over,” she recalled. “He ran back to where we’d passed it—he was breathless when he returned, holding this tiny, fluffy white kitten. She was smaller than my hand, bleeding from her mouth, and struggling to breathe.”
The kitten, weak and overheated, was in critical condition. The couple rushed her to a veterinarian before continuing their trip.
A Surprising Honeymoon Companion
Footage shared by the bride shows her husband sprinting down the highway to retrieve the animal. At first, she couldn’t believe he had actually found a living creature. “Shut up!” she exclaimed in the video as he returned with the kitten.
The vet initially listed the kitten under the temporary name “Caterpillar”—a joke the couple made after mistaking her for a large insect in the desert. But after a thorough examination, she was given antibiotics for a mouth injury and treated for fleas.
“Despite how bad she looked, the vet said she’d recover,” the bride said. “We thought she might not make it, but she pulled through.”
From Roadside Rescue to Luxury Getaway
Rather than leave her behind, the couple brought the kitten along for the rest of their honeymoon. They bottle-fed her, fashioned a makeshift litter box, and even turned a purse into a carrier to keep her close.
In a heartwarming finale to their story, the bride shared a clip of the now-healthy kitten perched on a Ritz Carlton room service cart, nibbling smoked salmon beside her.
“We’re taking her everywhere with us,” she said. “She’s our little wedding gift from the universe.”
The couple’s spontaneous act of kindness not only saved a life but gave them an unforgettable start to their marriage—with a furry new family member in tow.
