The stray cat, an elusive but familiar presence around Lexi’s barn, had never shown signs of pregnancy. “She was one of those cats that belonged to no one and everyone,” Lexi says. “She’d disappear for weeks, then reappear. We had no idea she had kittens.”

Following the cries, Lexi and her family located the kittens—tucked inside the undercarriage of their side-by-side vehicle. “There was no way for them to get out,” she explains. “They were just waiting for their mom to come back.”
