Yolo County, CA – An unlikely friendship between a grieving dog and an abandoned kitten has captured hearts after the pair found solace in one another through the Yolo County SPCA.
A Kitten in Need
Hopper, a cream tabby kitten just weeks old, was discovered alone in a family’s backyard with no mother or siblings in sight. Rescuers brought him to the Yolo County SPCA, where staff quickly realized he needed more than just nourishment—he needed love.
“He was a baby without a mom, but not for long,” the shelter shared.
A Dog Missing Her Pups
Meanwhile, Hazy, a stray dog taken in by the SPCA, was mourning a devastating loss. After arriving pregnant at the shelter, she gave birth—but none of her puppies survived. Heartbroken, Hazy cried through her first nights in foster care, longing to care for a baby of her own.
When rescuers introduced her to Hopper, everything changed.
An Instant Connection
The moment Hazy heard the tiny kitten’s cries, her demeanor shifted. “Her eyes lit up,” the SPCA recounted. Without hesitation, she embraced Hopper as her own, allowing him to nuzzle against her as if he were her puppy.
Though Hopper still required bottle-feeding, Hazy provided constant affection, grooming him and keeping him close. “These two have become the cutest little family,” the shelter said.
Healing Together
The bond between the two proved transformative. Hazy, once withdrawn, blossomed into a playful, affectionate companion, while Hopper thrived under her care.
“Hazy treats Hopper like her ‘son,’” the SPCA shared. The pair spend their days wrestling, cuddling, and chasing each other—with Hazy patiently tolerating the kitten’s boundless energy. At night, they curl up together, purring and sighing contentedly.
A Happy Ending
What began as separate tragedies has turned into a story of resilience and love. Thanks to the Yolo County SPCA, Hazy and Hopper will spend their lives together in a forever home, proving that family isn’t defined by species—but by heart.
