A rescued cat named Ivory gave her foster mom a heartwarming New Year’s surprise—delivering five healthy kittens just hours into 2024, days after being saved from a hoarding situation.
From Neglect to Nurturing
Ivory, a one-year-old cat, had spent her life in cramped, unsanitary conditions before being taken in by Heidi Shoemaker, founder of Foster Kitten Mama. Recognizing that Ivory was heavily pregnant, Heidi prepared a cozy birthing space, ensuring the expectant mother had a clean, safe environment—a first for the young cat.
“She’s had at least one litter before, but this will be her last,” Heidi said. Ivory quickly adapted to her new surroundings, purring contentedly and bonding with her foster mom, often curling up in her lap for belly rubs.
A New Year’s Miracle
For days, Ivory rearranged blankets in her nesting box, keeping Heidi on alert. A camera was set up to monitor her, and just after midnight on January 1, Ivory went into labor. By early morning, she had delivered five kittens—three tabbies and two tuxedos—all nursing peacefully.
“She and the babies are happy, warm, and full,” Heidi shared. Ivory has been a devoted mother, meticulously grooming her newborns and cradling them as they sleep. The kittens, now plump and thriving, will soon open their eyes and take their first wobbly steps.
A Bright Future Ahead
With round-the-clock care from Heidi, Ivory and her kittens will remain in foster care until they’re ready for adoption. For now, the room echoes with tiny squeaks and purrs—a joyful start to the new year for a cat who finally knows safety and love.
