Baozi, a skateboarding cat from Wenzhou, Zhejiang, has made headlines by setting the Guinness World Record for “Fastest cat to skateboard 10 meters.” The American Shorthair cat completed the 10-meter course in 12.85 seconds, owner Li Jiangtao told Red Star News on May 29.
About Baozi
At 1 year and 8 months old (equivalent to a 15-year-old human), Baozi exemplifies the breed’s strong, muscular build and adventurous spirit. American Shorthairs are known for intelligence and curiosity, traits that would prove crucial in her record-breaking journey.
Discovering Her Talent
Li, a professional pet trainer, initially brought Baozi home to scare away mice. However, he noticed her intense focus while he trained dogs on skateboards. “She’d stare at the board, almost as if she wanted to try it,” Li recalled. Sensing her interest, he began targeted training.
The Training Process
Training a cat proved far more challenging than training dogs. Cats are less obedient and more sensitive to environmental changes, prone to stress. Li spent nearly two months desensitizing Baozi to outdoor environments, using treats to help her adapt.
Before skateboarding, Baozi mastered foundational skills like jumping through hoops, ringing doorbells, and balancing on a basketball. These “circus-style” drills took 2–3 months and built her confidence and coordination. When she finally stepped onto the skateboard, her progress was rapid: by early 2025, she could glide smoothly on flat ground, even performing 360-degree spins. Her 10-meter time dropped from over 20 seconds to 12.85 seconds in just one month.
Breaking the Record
Guinness World Records officially recognized Baozi’s achievement, smashing the organization’s initial 25-second benchmark. “It’s a miracle,” Li said. “People often think cats are too aloof to train, but Baozi shows what’s possible with patience.”
What’s Next
Baozi’s journey isn’t over. Li has designed a new training plan focusing on advanced skills like autonomous cornering and obstacle avoidance. “She loves the challenge,” he added.
Baozi’s story highlights the untapped potential in cats, proving that with professional training, patience, and respect for their nature, even the “indifferent” feline can achieve extraordinary feats. As Li notes, “Every cat has hidden talents—we just need to listen and adapt to their rhythm.”
