Long Island authorities said two dogs and a cat perished in a house fire allegedly set intentionally by a tenant. The fire broke out in a residential building in Huntington on May 28, 2025, with firefighters arriving to find the structure engulfed in flames, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
Emergency responders found the three pets in a second-floor bedroom but were unable to save them. Officials determined the animals died from smoke inhalation. “It’s a sad loss for the family and a reminder of the danger of intentional fires,” a fire department spokesperson Kevin Harris said.
Police arrested Jason Rivera, a 32-year-old resident of the home, charging him with second-degree arson. Investigators believe the fire started in the living room with gasoline as an accelerant, though the motive remains under investigation. Records show Rivera had prior disputes with the property owner over lease terms. The house sustained extensive fire and water damage, and the American Red Cross is aiding the two displaced residents.
Local animal welfare group “Long Island Pet Safe” has since urged pet owners to install smoke alarms and have evacuation plans. “Pets depend on us in emergencies—preparation can save lives,” said the group’s director Lisa Chen.
